Thre pairs of shoes can catch the thieves.

Three pairs of shoes left on the side of Lake Link on Friday led sheriff’s deputies to three men wanted for robbery and grand theft.

Emanuel Spence, 27; Jacoury Wilson, 23, and Tyrell Robinson, 26, held up a Bank of America at 3010 Cypress Gardens Blvd. in Winter Haven about 12:40 p.m. Friday and used a 1995 Dodge Spirit that had been stolen Thursday night as a getaway car, according to a Polk County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Spence is from Lake Wales and the other two men are from Winter Haven, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Strappy, platform, wedge and more: This spring, feet come first

The Chinese zodiac tells us it’s the year of the rat, but I beg to differ: Now that fashion has finally gotten over endless “it” bags, it’s the year of the statement shoe. And anything goes, as long as it’s eye-catching, unusual or bright –or all of the above.

The city has gone positively crazy for bits of strap and leather. Town Shoes has collaborated on a spring collection with fashion designer David Dixon in patent fuchsia, yellow and cobalt; Ron White unveils his revamped flagship store in the Manulife Centre today; and Browns has a 2,500-square-foot boutique in the works on Bloor (next to Nike) that will open later this month and feature Manolo, Miu Miu, Pucci, Givenchy and Costume National. Not to mention Corbo, Plum and Specchio, the latter with its colourfully swirling Stephen pumps, equal parts Florentine marbled paper and Jackson Pollock splatter, and multi-coloured gouache Dries van Noten stilettos. At this rate, Yorkville will soon have as many shoe stores as it has hairdressers. morehttp://www.nationalpost.com/todays_paper/story.html?id=377753

Put on your dancing shoes — it’s Lindyfest

By NANCY WOZNY

Frankie Manning danced the Lindy Hop at Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom during its heydey in the 1930s and ’40s. Today, he’s still teaching the ins and outs of this lightning-fast dance.

Manning, who’s also known as the Ambassador of Lindy Hop, will hold court this weekend as hundreds of enthusiasts gather for the 12th annual Lindyfest at the University of Houston. The four-day event includes workshops, lectures and marathon dance jams.

“Since I am still around, I want to help spread the dance,” said Manning, who at 93 travels the world teaching.

Shoe pain

Posted on March 12th, 2008 by Ashok Chavda.

In 15th-century Venice, swanky Italian ladies wore daft elevated shoes called chopines. They were designed to keep costly hemlines clear of dirty streets during the short hop from palazzo to gondola. Gradually, they became status symbols.

Lesley Thomas
If the shoe fits: Lesley Thomas in Giuseppe Zanotti’s comfy platforms, left, in painful Pucci high heels, centre, and at the water cooler in Alexander McQueen’s stilt-like chopines

The taller the shoe and the more pairs you had (ideally, a set for each dress), the richer you seemed. Some were 12 inches high and could not be put on without help.

These so-called shoes sound like a stupid idea, do they not? British designer Alexander McQueen doesn’t think so. His contribution to the spring trend for statement footwear is made-to-order chopines (in other words, their price tag will be hefty) for the 21st-century rich girl about town.

If women managed to negotiate cobbled streets in these heels four centuries ago, then surely I can stride across the office carpet in them. After all, McQueen’s modern interpretation, made from silver satin and tasselled rope, is a mere eight inches high.

I discovered at once why these shoes needed their own staff. It is impossible to get into them without assistance. If you try to put them on while standing, you will fall over. Seated is easier, but it’s difficult to get up again. Imagine you have strapped your feet, not very securely, to two oil rigs.

Bah, handbag! It’s time for a worthier obsession: shoes

Posted on March 12th, 2008 by Ashok Chavda.
Categories: Shoes in the News, shoe news.

Ditch that ‘It’ bag and get ready to flaunt your heels, says Hannah Betts

For anyone who has clasped a handbag that has a Christian name (think Smythson’s Nancy), an £800+ price tag, and is so heavy that it requires an accompanying osteopath, the good news is that the “It” bag is - at long last - behind us.

Floral shoes, Prada
Floral Shoes £440, Prada 0207 647 5000

The bad news is that it has been usurped by that considerably more challenging phenomenon, the “It” shoe. An object - indeed, objet - with more in the way of smells and bells than a Vatican Easter.

Think less in terms of a nifty pair of pumps to carry you from A to B, and more sci-fi fantasy footwear to transport the wearer into an all-new fashion dimension.

It was no less a sartorial deity than Miuccia Prada who saw off the arm-candy era, opining: “The obsession with handbags has finished a little now. It feels over. It’s about shoes.”

And, of course, Miuccia is queen of the universal fashion conversion: what strikes the viewer as clod-hoppingly monstrous when she first showcases it will be emulated fanatically within the blinking of a fashion eye. more
